Two recent completions have been recognized with Merit Awards by the 2024 AIA California Design Awards program as projects that “celebrate the value exceptional design has on the fabric of society.”
Completed in 2022, the International Arrivals Facility (IAF) at Seattle Tacoma International Airport (SEA) is the most complex endeavor in the airport’s history. The 600,000-square-foot, LEED Silver addition to the campus integrates terminal concourses to create a welcoming gateway to the United States that doubles international flight capacity. The project includes a 780-foot aerial pedestrian walkway, the longest structure across an active taxilane in the world. As the jury said, “This is a really interesting addition to an already incredibly dense infrastructure. The bridge—to have a structure that airplanes can scoot around and under—was a very a bold move.”

Our second Merit Award recipient is the new Ralph S. O’Connor Building for Engineering and Science, the largest research facility on Rice University’s historic core campus, providing students with technology-rich facilities that embody the University’s goal to stay at the forefront of scientific discovery. Described AIA California, “The jury admires the attention to access to daylight and fresh air, and selection of healthy and resilient materials aimed at reducing carbon emissions and minimizing chemicals of concern within the indoor air environment.” Complementing the surrounding historic buildings, the new building features a facade of articulated brick pilasters and fins. Completed in September 2023, the building has already become a new center of gravity for campus activity, enriching the academic and social experience.

Architects Javier Arizmendi, FAIA, and Michael Oerth, AIA, take readers on a technical deep dive into the facade design of the new Ralph S. O’Connor School of Engineering and Science at Rice University in Houston in a recent article in Texas Architect magazine.
Complementing the materiality of the historic campus architecture, the O’Connor Building utilizes the same locally sourced, handcrafted St. Joe’s Brick Works brick omnipresent across campus—with a twist.

Texas Architect dives into the creative brick-and-punched-window composition, articulated by a series of angled brick pilasters and fins. We see design repetition in the stunning veil assembly, a custom brise-soleil that realizes the same pattern yet offers ventilation. The result: mitigated solar heat gain, reflected natural light, and a reduction of glare inside.
The final assembly not only enriches the building’s aesthetic and provides thermal comfort for pedestrians, but also it provides a sense of scale to one of the campus’ largest buildings. Read on for more about the technical aspects of this new academic and social hub design.

The transformation of the Wellesley College Science Complex was the most ambitious building project in the institution’s modern history, and the Boston Society for Architecture (BSA) has recognized it with a 2023 Built Design Excellence Honor Award in the Education Facilities category.
Citing the project’s careful mix of removal, renovation, and addition, the BSA identified the modernization of the buildings and its LEED Platinum certification as essential to creating an inviting, sustainable hub for science.

“The project submission told the story of this complex reinvention of Wellesley’s science hub extremely well and hit all Design Excellence objectives,” the jury wrote. “The team took an outdated science facility that had been added to many times and consumed more energy than any other building on campus and transformed it into a state-of-the-art, beautifully designed center with different nodes and hubs for student exploration and learning.”
